Unlike most modern treatments for acne and rosacea, sulfur has been used for treating skin problems for over thousand years. This treatment is one of the oldest known treatments with several references in history. Even today this proves to be one of the very effective treatments for several skin problems like acne and eczema. Sulfur was used in its natural form in olden days. This element is known for its pungent smell. Today the sulfur products are so well processed and mixed with several other elements that they don’t stand alone as the same old rotten smelling element. For example, in some products they would come mixed with benzoyl peroxide. Compound of sulfur namely sulfacetamide is used in many products. This can have similar benefits to benzoyl peroxide in working as an oxidizing agent. However, prescription from a dermatologist is required to buy most of the sulfur acne products. Sulfur acne products when applied on skin can dissolve excess oil and sebum on epidermis. This action can be compared to that of alpha-hydroxy acids. Thus they act as chemical peeling agents and remove the trapped debris and dead cells from outer layers of skin. These products come in different forms like gels, lotions, creams and soaps. Concentrations vary depending on the skin type. For example, oily skin would require more sulfur when compared to normal and dry skin. Due to the known side effects like skin rashes and dryness, one has to stop using if he gets a sense of irritation on skin. Excessive corrosive action of these products needs to be dealt with carefully.
