Sulfuric acid (also spelled Sulphuric acid) is a strong mineral acid with the molecular formula H2SO4. It is soluble in water at all concentrations. It was once known as oil of vitriol, coined by the alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan 8th century (Geber) after his discovery of the chemical. [1]
Sulfuric acid has many applications, and is one of the best products of the chemical industry. World production in 2001 was 165 million tonnes, valued at approximately U.S. $ 8 billion. Principal uses include ore processing, fertilizer manufacturing, oil refining, wastewater processing, and chemical synthesis. Its ability to produce smelly sulfur compounds has provided the vitriol additional word which means “bitter, vulgar language.”
Many proteins are made of sulfur containing amino acids (such as cysteine and methionine) which produce sulfuric acid (or sulfate ion, SO42-neutral pH) when metabolized in the body.
