    OK. You need to think about the charges that the various ions have. So, for magnesium oxide, if you look at the periodic table, magnesium is in the second column. That means that it will form an ion with a charge of +2. Oxygen is in the second column to the left of the nobel gases, and so it forms an ion of -2. So, magnesium oxide would have the formula MgO. (You only need one of each ion to balance the + and the – charges).

    Nickel forms a +2 ion and chloride is -1, so you need 2 chloride ions to balance the +2 of nickel, so you have NiCl2.

    You should be able to get the others. When you get to things like iron, copper and lead, these compounds can form ions with different charges. The number in the name tells you the charge on the ion. So, in iron(II)oxide the iron has a +2 charge. In lead (IV) fluoride, the lead ion is +4.
